In 2014, when Barack Obama announced that the United States was ending its decades-long diplomatic stand-off with Cuba, he thanked Pope Francis for encouraging the rapprochement.

It was an unusual moment of public recognition for the strictly behind-closed-doors work of Vatican diplomacy, a rare spotlight on the Pope’s unique role as a faith leader and significant player in international politics.
