Ahead of Bible Sunday tomorrow, a Scripture scholar reflects on the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution, Dei Verbum, promulgated 50 years ago by Pope Paul VI Some time ago, an elderly priest said to me: “We are always talking about the good news. But what is the good news?” Shortly afterwards, I happened to be rereading Dei Verbum (DV) and I came across the answer in paragraph four: “God is with us to free us from the darkness of sin and death and to raise us up to eternal life.” There is no better definition.We have just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Pope Paul’s promulgation of Dei Verbum, the Second Vatican Council’s key document on divine revelation.
