Short, pointed and easy to grasp

Homilies in Lent present the preacher with some difficult challenges but the solutions are all around in the everyday culture of the faithful, for those willing to draw on the familiar to illustrate the divine Delivering his homily, the priest must make reference to the readings for the day, of course, but he also has to “open up” their meaning for the contemporary congregation. He may wish to refer to current political events, but he can just as easily refer to the latest soap opera cliffhanger if he wishes – so long as he can relate it to the everyday life of his listeners.
