Whole season to celebrate

When we mark the moment of the Word made flesh, we should also recall the richness of all the feasts that are part of Christmastide “Christmas is coming. the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man’s hat.” This carol introduces what for many are the three main facets of Christmas: feasting, almsgiving and receiving. But Christmas is so much more than this, and it is important to remember it is a season, not just a solemnity. It is the second half of the Advent/Christmas cycle of festivities. The Christmas solemnity has several Masses: vigil, midnight, dawn and day. All have their own Gospel and their own emphasis. It is important therefore not to give them all a single blanket approach.
