The distinctive scarlet worn by cardinals signifies the blood of the martyrs. But it was not a cardinal who wore red at a meeting between the Prince of Wales and Syrian refugees this month. While Cardinal Vincent Nichols, who hosted the event, wore black with a red fascia, it was the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, who sported all scarlet (pictured above with Coptic Bishop Angaelos). Was the Anglican cleric making a point about the martyrdom of Christians in the Middle East? Apparently not:
