Pope’s backing could make Dorothy’s day


 
The cause of social activist Dorothy Day, who famously quipped that she didn’t want to be canonised, has received a fillip from the Pope’s decision to namecheck her during his US trip.It was in his historic address to Congress that Francis mentioned the New York-born founder of the Catholic Worker Movement – a move, according to the writer who edited her diaries and letters, which is sure to advance her towards sainthood.“In many ways Dorothy would be a perfect saint for the Francis papacy,” says Robert Ellsberg, editor and publisher of Orbis Books. “Her overarching message is that holiness is not wrapped up in a cosy Catholic world, and that is very much Pope Francis’ spirit as well.
