As papal ambassador to Ukraine, Archbishop Thomas Gullickson needed all the diplomatic skills he could muster given he was serving in a country that was partly taken over by another. The American archbishop instead became a firm critic on Twitter of Russia’s involvement in Ukraine after the country’s annexing of Crimea.  Perhaps more unusual was the use of his Twitter account to send out links to articles that were less than favourable about his boss, Pope Francis.  Last Saturday, however, it was announced that Archbishop Gullickson, who has been in Ukraine since 2011, is being moved to a quieter posting as the new nuncio to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
