Top of the churches


 
In August we reported that a number of Catholic places of worship were vying for a place in a list of the top 10 modern churches built after 1953. It has now become clear that 10 Catholic churches are among are 24 modern ecclesiastical buildings shortlisted by the National Churches Trust. The 10 Catholic contenders include the 1950s brick and tile of the English Martyrs, at Wallasey on Merseyside, designed by F. X. Velarde; the 1993 glasswork of Michael Blee at the Abbey Church at Douai Abbey in Woolhampton, Berkshire; and the soaring 1960s concrete of A.R. Conlon at St Francis Xavier’s in Falkirk.
