Our Irish roots


 
The Tablet’s links with Ireland will be marked tomorrow with a special Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral in the city. Among those due to be present in the congregation will be the country’s president, Michael D. Higgins, a Tablet reader, picture above, with the Mass taking place as part of the journal’s 175th anniversary. In 1849, Frederick Lucas, the founder of The Tablet, moved the offices from London to Dublin until Lucas’ death in 1855. His brother, Edward, married Mary Whitty, whose siblings included Sr Vincent Whitty, a leading Sister of Mercy who helped establish the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, Anne, also a Mercy sister and Fr Robert Whitty SJ, who led the British Jesuits.
