When Maureen Martin, the head teacher of a successful girls school for more than two decades as well as being executive principal of another academy, met the Prime Minister, David Cameron, recently, it was only natural for him to ask how she managed.Ms Martin, who is head teacher of Coloma Convent in Croydon, south London, told us that she replied by quoting the Latin motto of the school: “Laborare est Orare” (“to work is to pray”).She met the PM at a reception in Downing Street for head teachers after being invited by her local MP. Coloma Convent was founded and is still supported by the Congregation for the Daughters of Mary and Joseph, and Ms Martin was herself educated at the school. She is also executive principal of the Quest Academy, run by the Coloma Trust.
