Pray and ride


 
In the early Church it meant abstaining from meat and all that comes from flesh including milk, cheese and eggs. Today, Lenten observance, which started on Wednesday, is less about giving something up than about taking something on – such as, for instance, care for the environment. The Bishop of Ramsbury, a suffragan see in the Diocese of Salisbury, has decided to give up his car for the period: no easy task, as he drives 1,500 miles a month. After putting his car keys away, Bishop Edward Condry is going to tend to his flock by bicycle, given that public transport is limited in Wiltshire.
