On his visit to Strasbourg to address the European Parliament, Pope Francis met 97-year-old Helma Schmidt, whose family he had lodged with in 1985 when he was learning German at the Goethe Institute in Boppard, West Germany. Mrs Schmidt used to test his vocabulary every evening while they were sitting at the kitchen table. After he went back to Argentina, he and the Schmidts regularly corresponded for over 20 years.
