A spy in my soup


 
The caricature of a beaky, querulous John Henry Newman that appeared in Vanity Fair magazine in 1877 is rarely chosen for book covers or prayer cards. The artist “Spy” (Leslie Ward) was on his way to see Fr Newman – as he then was – in Birmingham when he spotted him on the platform at Euston Station. He followed him into the buffet where Newman ordered soup. Malcolm Johnson, who has selected 50 Vanity Fair cartoons for a new book, told us: “Ward sat opposite him at the next table and secretly began to sketch. He was not satisfied with the result so went to Birmingham the next day and called at the Oratory to ask when Newman might come out. The priest, thinking he wanted an interview, went to fetch him.
