A seven metre pole bearing the gold-and-white flag of the Holy See seemed just the thing to declare the presence of the Catholic church in the picturesque Kent town of Westerham.That was the idea of Fr Ivan Aquilina, of the Sevenoaks Ordinariate Group who is parish priest of St John the Baptist Church. But his plan hit difficulties when neighbours Michael and Kim Coates complained to Sevenoaks District Council that a flagpole would be out of keeping with the area and expressed worries that flapping ropes would keep them awake at night.But Fr Aquilina told us that several local churches had flagpoles, and that he would wind the rope around the pole to minimise any noise.
