Pope Francis appears to have breathed life into a language “as dead as dead can be” with his Latin Twitter account now hitting 213,000 followers, more than those who follow his German and Arabic tweets. The tweets are sent out by Mgr Daniel Gallagher, a papal Latinist, who said the ancient language has a “transnational way of communicating which is still very much alive.” Mgr Gallagher succeeded the legendary Fr Reginald – Reggie – Foster, who served in the role from the 1960s up to 2009. But Fr Reggie, who now lives in Milwaukee, told us he does most of the Latin tweeting. “He [Mgr Daniel] is the one who transmits the Italian tweets to me and he calls back the next day and I give him the Latin,” said Fr Reggie, who taught Mgr Daniel.
