When Buckfast Abbey in Devon first started producing its famous Tonic Wine in the 1920s, the drink was marketed with the jolly slogan: “Three small glasses a day for good health and lively blood.” Today, however, the abbey’s Benedictine monks find themselves dragged into a sobering row over Buckfast Tonic Wine – known as “Buckie” – after it was linked to crime in Scotland.Last year, Police Scotland revealed that 6,496 crime reports between 2010 and 2012 mentioned the drink, which combines caffeine with red wine. This led Elaine Smith, the Labour MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston, to invite the Abbot of Buckfast, David Charlesworth, to Scotland to see for himself the effects of the drink, known among local punters as “commotion potion”.
