Although a canon lawyer for much of his priestly life, Mgr Ralph Brown always retained his pastoral warmth and sense of fun. The former vicar general of the Archdiocese of Westminster, who died this month at the age of 82, was known for bringing his roulette wheel to family Christmas gatherings and acting as the banker – the winnings were then donated to Crisis at Christmas. He was also renowned for his skill in making margarita cocktails. Mgr Brown spent a long period in different capacities at the Westminster Metropolitan Tribunal during the 1960s and 1970s, when more possibilities were opened up for people in broken or irregular marriages to have them annulled. Mgr Brown saw this work as immensely pastoral. His Requiem Mass was said on Tuesday at Westminster Cathedral
