Catholic schools
The  proposed re-introduction of grammar schools and changes to faith school admissions is a timely opportunity for Catholic schools to review their admissions criteria.

It seems socially acceptable for atheists and agnostics to feign their commitment to the Catholic faith to get their children into a good school. We encourage them to do so by the production of baptism certificates on demand, or after a protracted period of instruction and/or attendance at Mass. In many cases there is no valid baptism, as the essential elements of desire and commitment are not present.

I have recently discovered on speaking to Anglican ministers that sometimes the same families also obtain Anglican baptism certificates, having fulfilled similar criteria before or after ours. With two certificates they have educational choices for their children ahead of them which other, more honest, families do not.
