The Pope’s friend


 
Your Notebook item (“The right man for the job?”, 21 November) asks if the Mexican Archbishop Jorge Wong has been appointed to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America because his closeness to the Pope means he will be his “eyes and ears on the Commission”. This implies that either Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who chairs the commission, needs watching, or that he is not close to Pope Francis. The Cardinal’s own testimony indicates a rather different interpretation. In 2008, the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires was a keynote speaker at the International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec. “He came out of friendship for me and to support me,” Cardinal Ouellet said in an interview. “I've known him for many years, and we are good friends.”Edmund P
