Original Sin in question


 
Fr Daniel O’Leary (“Illuminated by starlight”, 3 October) has put the issue of cosmology and creation in the spotlight. The doctrine of Original Sin has barely been informed by science. In our liturgies and homilies we present Christ as the restorer of our former, short-lived glory, before sin, rather than the one who brings to fulfilment all of the evolving creation. Thinking of the incarnation as God’s “plan B” robs Christ of his active participation with the Father, from the beginning of time to its completion. Original Sin perceived as the loss of our “perfect state”, with baptism setting the record straight, promotes a binary mentality.
