Loyal address


 
 I share Fr Richard Barton’s distaste at Cardinal Vincent Nichols presuming to speak on behalf of the whole Catholic community in offering congratulations to Elizabeth Windsor on her longevity (Letters, 19 September). As with the head of state, the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales can presume to represent me and speak on my behalf when I have the opportunity to vote him (or her) into office, and can vote them out again. Matt JeziorskiLutonCardinal Nichols quite rightly congratulated the Queen for her record-breaking service to all the people of the United Kingdom in which Fr Barton is fortunate to reside. What has happened to Fr Barton’s loyalty to his brother priests let alone to his bishop and cardinal? Perhaps he would be better suited to service in the
