I share Fr Richard Barton’s distaste at Cardinal Vincent Nichols presuming to speak on behalf of the whole Catholic community in offering congratulations to Elizabeth Windsor on her longevity (Letters, 19 September). As with the head of state, the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales can presume to represent me and speak on my behalf when I have the opportunity to vote him (or her) into office, and can vote them out again.
