It was good to see your item (Notebook, 29 August) on John Carroll but the account is somewhat misleading: he was never Bishop John Carroll SJ. Carroll had been a member of the English (now British) Province of the Society of Jesus and studied at the college in Liège, the ancestor of the now beleaguered Heythrop. As you rightly say, he lived through the suppression of the society in 1773.At the suppression, however, he ceased to be a Jesuit, went back to America, and became de facto superior of the Maryland mission. Unlike some of his confrères he did not return to the Jesuits even at the formal restoration of the society in 1814 (the English Province itself came back into being a dozen years earlier). He had, by that time, already been chosen as Bishop of Baltimore, elected
