As a frequent visitor to the Catholic shrine at Walsingham I concur with most of the positive comments made in these columns about the planned refurbishments (Peter Stanford, 8 August; Letters, 22 August). However, I have two concerns about the current state of affairs.The Slipper Chapel shrine can lay some claim to being the holiest ground in England, hallowed by centuries of devotion to our Blessed Lady. Any changes to it need to be made with the utmost sensitivity. It therefore seems regrettable that, having entered the hushed and beautiful chapel porch, pilgrims are immediately confronted by an obtrusive and garish fund-raising placard. More unhappily still, those wishing to express their devotion by lighting a candle in the adjoining Holy Ghost Chapel will find that the space has now
