Change at Walsingham


 
I agree with Peter Stanford’s comments (column, 8 August) on the need for modern facilities at our National Shrine at Walsingham. The well-used café and shop do not have enough space and there is no real shelter from bad weather.I don’t see how the peace and spiritual quality of Walsingham could be compromised by the sensitive modernisation plans. The facilities at the Anglican Shrine are impressive – and they take nothing from its atmosphere and the sense of being in a very special place The reality is that the shrine has to meet modern needs. The idea of a hostel for pilgrims is a wonderful one. I can feel bereft boarding the coach after a one-day visit knowing that I may not be back for another year. Peter Stanford is sright that this facility would be taken
