Supreme value


 
I welcome Clifford Longley’s assertion (25 July) that Canon 1752 (declaring the “salvation of souls” to be the “supreme law” of the Church) trumps all the other laws in the Code. With regards to the reception of adult converts with marriage impediments, over 40 years of coalface ministry, I played that trump card with ceaseless and remorseless regularity. When challenged by a brother priest who discovered a marriage irregularity in one of my recent converts and refused him communion, I decided to write to my bishop. I made it very clear that over the years I had received into full communion scores of former non-catholics with similar impediments and that I intended to continue to do so. I also offered my resignation in writing because I had no wish to comprom
