Guilty feelings


 
Catherine Pepinster, in her book review of God and Mrs Thatcher: the battle for Britain's soul (18 April), says that the author “offers no reason why Thatcher chose St Francis’ prayer” as she claimed her victory in 1979. During the election campaign, a day centre in Cleethorpes was opened by a Cabinet minister and, as the local parish priest, I used the prayer of St Francis as part of the ceremony as, I thought, it contained a not very subtle anti-Tory sentiment.
