Advice on voting


 
Is it not extraordinary that in the election guidance of the Bishops of England and Wales (News from Britain and Ireland, 28 February) , no mention is made of Britain’s “defence” policy. All three main parties support nuclear deterrence, which is based on the willingness to mass-murder the innocent as a way of “keeping the peace”. There is no way round this crux, which has a direct bearing on the right to innocent life which is at the heart of the letter’s argument. The papacy has been consistent in denouncing it as “baneful and fallacious”, to use Pope Benedict’s words.
