There is no question that the killing of the 12 people at the Paris office of Charlie Hebdo was a tragic, barbaric and completely disproportionate reaction by Islamic extremists to a perceived insult to their faith. However, I feel deeply disturbed that the world, as represented by the media, seems to have seen this incident solely as an evil attack on free speech.No, it is not illegal here or in France to mock religious ideas or expressions of religious faith. The terrorists were in no way representative of Islam. Like many Christians, they have grossly distorted the compassionate message of their founder, and brought shame on their faith.However, we need to look with more circumspection into this very sad event.
