In Catherine Pepinster’s survey of 175 years of The Tablet’s history “Journal of a journey”, 3 January), there is a very curious gap. There is no mention of the 68 years when the paper passed into clerical ownership, first of all that of Fr Herbert Vaughan and subsequently the Archdiocese of Westminster, and no mention of the 31 years’ editorship of Douglas Woodruff, who can reasonably be regarded as having laid the foundations of The Tablet we read and appreciate
