Sad and painful resignation


 
It is sad thatKieran Conry has had to resign as Bishop of Arundel and Brighton (www.thetablet.co.uk). He was a pastorally aware bishop who was liked and trusted. It seems to me that the principal “sinners” mentioned by Cardinal Vincent Nichols are not those who love too much but those in the institutional Church who impose the intolerable burden of celibacy on all clergy indiscriminately, and do not lift a finger to help them – let alone help the wider Church that is deprived of ministry in so many areas.Surely an institution operating in the name of Jesus would not wring its hands at the bishop’s frailty but would urge him to take stock and to continue in the good work he was doing in his diocese.
