John W. O’Malley (“Moment of truth”, 6 September) makes an important point about how decisions are made in the forthcoming Synod on the Family. Will it be another case of a fait accompli, or will there really be shared decision-making? Another key question is whether the bishops will consult good Christian psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as married couples? Theology on its own without this input is going to lack substance and seem hollow.The late Dr Jack Dominian, the highly respected Catholic psychiatrist, believed there is a gap between institutional reality, and the community of love which Jesus set up. He was responsible for a dramatic change in the Church’s attitude towards marriage failure and divorce, which he believed to be not so
