Marna Clarke (Letters,6 September) warns the rest of the UK in her pro-break-up the UK argument that “ …You have all had your voting chances over the years …” So have the Scots in every UK general election, and they have consistently voted pretty much in line with the rest of the country and rejected the nationalist argument; only in elections for the devolved government at Holyrood, where about 25 per cent of the total electorate (that is, half of the around 50 per cent of those who bothered to vote at all) chose parties in favour of separation.The tone of her letter reveals the “me-first’’ insularity that is the Achilles’ heel of Scottish nationalism and is an ever- present and unpleasant presence in the referendum debate.
