Lack of the sacraments


 
Fr Chris Benyon reminds us (Letters, 10 May) that half the Church has no sacramental life and that the Church will not ordain the thousands of people willing to help feed the flock. It is interesting to note the number of bishops in England appointed from religious orders, to which I would add the Bishop of Aberdeen, and, of course, the Bishop of Rome himself. An episcopacy drawn entirely from the religious orders will be a must, when ordination to the priesthood is extended to the viri probati whom the Church so badly needs if the Eucharist is to be brought to all. My concern is how the probati will be “proved” as time goes on, and thousands live and die without the sacraments.
