Liturgy – a declining priority

What happened to “fons et culmen”? The redundancy of Philip Jakob after 20 years of excellent service as musical director of St Marie’s Cathedral and diocesan adviser on liturgical music for Hallam (News from Britain and Ireland, 19 April), is the most recent action which shows that liturgy is not as high (i.e. the primary position) as it should be on the agendas of diocesan trustees. I realise that trustees have a very important task, but the priorities are wrong. Pruning liturgical branches is not going to bear fruit … they are wrong branches. For most Catholics, the only regular contact with the life of the Church is through their worship so it needs to be well celebrated and inclusive. Liturgical music is integral to the liturgy, not an add on. (Fr) Aidan Pete
