Manchester’s treasure


 
I was disappointed to read Fr Peter Gooden’s low opinion of Mancunian Catholics (Letters, 19 April) who, he thinks, cannot empathise with the suffering of Our Lord by contemplating Norman Adams’ Stations of the Cross in St Mary’s Church, Mulberry Street. I agree with Fr Gooden that many who visit Manchester’s city-centre “Hidden Gem” are not experts in art; many are not experts in religion either. However, I completely disagree with him that these works of great devotion should be in the sanitised setting of a museum of modern art. Thankfully, Mancunians are blessed to have, in Canon Denis Clinch, a priest with the courage, vision and generosity of spirit to have commissioned these ­masterpieces for the Church.
