A letter in your Easter edition (19 April), headed “Married priests. It’s time”, struck a special chord for me. Some years ago a young man shared with me his desire to serve as a priest and his strong feeling that he was called to the priesthood. At the same time, he did not think he could embrace a life of celibacy and felt an equally strong calling towards married life. After much discussion, tongue-in-cheek, I said one solution would be to become an Anglican, get married and ordained and then rejoin the Catholic Church. Last week I met him again. He is now married, teaching with great success in a secondary school but still convinced he has a calling to something more.
