For the past 20 years or so by God’s grace I had been asked to sing the Exultet at the Easter Vigil Mass. Last year I was unable to do so as I was recovering after being hospitalised for three months by a rather rare illness which affects the motor system. Joy of joys, I am now able to sing again, with care. I was invited to sing this again this year even if I have to lean a little on the lectern. Previously, I had successfully used the setting by the late Dom Gregory Murray OSB which is demanding but quite singable, and satisfying. When I looked at the new translation which I had only seen for the first time this week, I realised I could not sing this as it is not rhythmically structured and uses some weird words such as “underworld” and “domain”.
