As a psychotherapist who counsels victims and perpetrators of clerical sexual abuse, I appreciated Fr Jim Christie’s recent remarks about the sexual-abuse scandal in the Church (“When theology trumps psychology”, 15 February; “Support is the key”, 22 February). I agree with him that part of the problem has been the church leadership’s tendency to theologise the problem, rather than understanding the human psychology of the psychic and spiritual damage to the victim and the psychology of the perpetrator’s sickness. “When theology trumps psychology” everyone is hurt, no one is understood and healing is blocked.
