Can politicians do God?


 

Tim Farron’s judgement that it is impossible to be both Christian and a member of a modern progressive political party, raises important questions for religious believers. I tell my students that Jean-Jacques Rousseau invented modern privatised religion at the same time as he invented a form of public civil religion by which the secular state constrains its citizens and punishes deviants.
