Saying sorry is not enough

From Vatican finances to marriage and the family, Pope Francis has indicated a willingness for change and reform. But on child abuse, there is a lack of progress, as events in Chile reveal last week, with the Synod on the Family under way in Rome, Pope Francis in his weekly audience at St Peter’s gave an enigmatic apology: “I would like to ask for forgiveness in the name of the Church for the scandals that have happened in this last period both in Rome and at the Vatican. I ask for your forgiveness.”Francis gave no specifics on the apology. The Vatican press office declined to provide details.
