Is authenticity enough?

British politics has suddenly become more interesting with the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party. He faces fierce battles with his own MPs, and the deployment of fear by the Tories and the right-wing press, but at last his party can try to carve out a future after New Labour perhaps the most effective way to assess the Labour leadership election is to disregard all the “ground-breaking” adjectives applied to the outcome and consider the alternatives. What would have happened if the party had instead chosen one of the other candidates on offer? Would the political world now be frothing with excitement and expectation and interest if, say, Andy Burnham, the early front-runner, was today the leader of Her Majesty’s Official Opposition.
