The Catholic faith of Charles Kennedy, who died suddenly on Tuesday, was an essential part of his identity as a Highland Scot. Yet the former leader of the Liberal Democrats rarely volunteered information about how his faith coloured his politics. He would, almost certainly, prefer to be remembered as a politician who was Catholic than as a Catholic politician.
