Pupils in Middlesbrough have been sleeping rough under cardboard to experience homelessness for themselves, as Paul Wilkinson found out when he spoke to the adults and children involved
Fifty-six pupils arrived at a sports hall in Middlesbrough at eight o’clock one evening last year carrying sleeping bags and toothbrushes in preparation for a night on a hard floor. They were taking part in a “sleepout” experiment to discover what it is like for those living rough on the streets of the most disadvantaged parts of Britain.The children were from St Peter’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, and were the pioneers for a project that it is hoped will be extended to schools across Teesside and beyond.
