Prayer among the abandoned

Michael Johnstone volunteered with a mission among the forlorn and destitute in Jamaica, and found their work to be devotion in action On the night of 20 May 1980 a fire raged through Eventide Home, a ramshackle, overcrowded wooden residence for the elderly in Kingston, Jamaica. The wooden home was razed to the ground, and 150 of the female residents were burnt to death. The immolation of so many helpless souls horrified the whole of the island and the day of the burial was declared a day of national mourning.That might have been the end of it, but for a young Chinese-Jamaican Jesuit priest this fire was the catalyst that brought him to his true vocation: to bring hope to a multitude of forgotten, abandoned, derelict people of the city, and then in the world at large.Fr Richard Ho Lung,
