“It’s gone,” the dog walker said. “Swum back to sea.” Standing on the bank of the River Swale, we peered down at the writhing churn of water. Certainly no sign of the seal that had just been reported here. All we could see were sand martins blithely flying low over the boiling cascade of water. A seal 50 miles inland – surely a hoax?
