It has been a tricky time lately for the penultimate petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “Lead us not into temptation”, or (in some other versions) “Do not bring us to the test”.
The French Catholic bishops have changed their translation from “Do not submit us to temptation” to “Do not allow us to enter into temptation”. And the Pope has criticised the current Italian translation, “Do not lead us into temptation”, on the grounds that this is not something that God could possibly do.
