There is almost a tradition that on the eve of the Olympic Games, money and drugs should compete as to which can create the biggest scandal. As this year’s Olympics open in Rio de Janeiro, the focus is on Russia, regarding drugs, and on boxing, regarding corruption. The thousands of athletes in more than 200 national teams who have converged on this Brazilian seaside city from all over the world deserve better. The Olympic ideal is about fair competition among the world’s top athletes to find the best, not who can bend the rules or cheat most effectively. If there is one thing the world can wish them it is not so much “Good luck” as that the shining vision behind the Games should triumph over the murkiness that has overshadowed the preliminaries.
