Catholic Church action on child abuse is stalling in wake of Peter Saunders affair


Worrying signs that Pope Francis’ crusade to stamp out child abuse in the church may have gone off the boil

 
There are still some in the Vatican who think the child abuse scandals which have rocked the Catholic Church are all the work of mischief-making journalists. The recently released film, Spotlight, paints a rather different picture. It tells how The Boston Globe broke the story of serious child abuse by priests in the archdiocese of Boston. Far from being irresponsibly mischievous, however, newspapers like the Globe had failed to notice the Church’s cover-up for years until a new editor from out of town realised what had been going on beneath journalists’ noses and painstaking research then exposed the scandal. Spotlight has been widely hailed as a film all Catholics ought to see – and perhaps all journalists. Viewing it ought to be compulsory across the Vatican.There are
