A human face turned towards the hungry


 
There is a serious food crisis in Britain this Christmas, with people going hungry in the world’s sixth-largest economy. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, wrote recently of his shock at discovering cases of poverty in Britain that reminded him of conditions in parts of Africa. It is less than a year since Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, said it was “frankly a disgrace” that in a civilised country like Britain some people could not afford to buy food.It has become increasingly accepted that the cardinal was right to identify the Government’s stricter rules regarding benefits payments as a major factor that was leaving people without enough to eat. The Government indignantly denied it at the time, even blaming the increasing use of food
