Justine Greening’s resignation from her job as Secretary of State for Education has made way for Damian Hinds, who, like her, favours promoting social mobility and socially liberal policies such as equal marriage. So why the change? It appears that there were several factors, but amongst them might have been Ms Greening’s reluctance to go forward with a measure designed to expand the number of government-funded Catholic schools, which Theresa May’s former close adviser, Nick Timothy, was instrumental in including in the last Tory election manifesto. Mrs May wanted it implemented. Ms Greening had countered by ordering a public consultation process – known in Westminster as “kicking it into the long grass”.
